Prototype Vs. Sample: Is There A Difference?
Coming up with the first product idea is an exciting moment in a fashion designer’s life. In most cases, fashion designers begin with sketches for their products. As a matter fact, it’s not uncommon for some designers to start off with a prototype. This gives them a better idea of what the final product will look like. Once the prototype is made, it’s easier to create a sample for kick starting the production process.
This brings us to an important question that often confuses fashion designers: Do prototypes and samples mean the same thing? If there’s a difference between a garment prototype and sample, what is it?
This post will help you understand the subtle difference between a sample and a prototype:
· A prototype serves a guide to try a new product design. On the other hand, a sample has several functions. For example, the sample is used to test a product before mass production takes place. You can use your sample to assess the fitting, size or general feel of a product prior to full scale garment manufacturing. This will help you revise the sample to ensure production goes smoothly.
· A prototype is generally considered the first sample of a product. You can make changes to it until you’re able to figure out your design. On the contrary, a sample sets the foundation for production. It contributes to a great product design, fabric, fit, and construction, as well as sound production process. It’s a smart idea to create multiple samples as the first one may not meet your expectations. As soon as a sample is approved by a designer, the garment factory can start bulk production.
· Prototype is something created by a designer, while a factory makes a sample.
Although there are a few minor differences between samples and prototypes, they have the same goal i.e. to produce visually appealing, good quality garments for your target customers.
